    Thank you for the wonderful explanation! I have a question: If your child is having difficulty memorizing some of the facts in one table (eg, let's say 6x3, 6x7 and 6x9), do we move on to the next set (7's) while still reviewing the ones they don't yet have memorized? In the past, I have held a child back who was struggling to memorize facts; we both got discouraged and moved on to a different program. But I would like to return to CM in Math and am concerned I will run into this again. Thank you!

    I have not yet experienced homeschooling from the teacher side, but I never remember my parents cramming anything into the “current” school year. We did a variation of year-round schooling and while there were things we left unfinished it was usually because it wasn’t working for us, we never had a hard and fast date for the “school year” being done. On the flip side my parents didn’t “graduate” my brother until about 3 weeks before he started college because he joined me on college study abroad for the summer and they counted it as two of his concurrent classes (he did several other concurrent classes the previous year too and had 20 credit hours when he started freshman year).

    Please help me understand. My 10-year-old daughter is in a Charlotte Mason school with 11 students. I'm constantly told that she can't concentrate and talks a lot. I'm not able to be there, but what are the teacher's responsibilities and mine too? I don't want to punish her at home, but if necessary, what approach should I take? What can the teacher do to help my child concentrate? She says she is bored.

    • @SimplyCharlotteMason
      @SimplyCharlotteMason 3 дня назад

      It is wonderful that you are respecting your child as a person here and asking her why her teacher is observing and reporting this behavior in her. If she is feeling bored, perhaps the school work is not at an appropriate level of difficulty for her or the lessons are lasting too long. It would be wonderful if you are able to meet with her teacher and discuss this situation in depth to see how you can both best support the child. If you are seeing struggles with concentration at home, certainly you can work on the habit of attention with her at home and help her to build this focus. In a Charlotte Mason approach, short focused lessons are used which will reinforce the habit of full attention. Sometimes a child's attention span is shorter and in that instance, we would recommend meeting them where they are. So for example, say you want to read a section from your history book and you plan for this lesson to be 20 minutes long, but the student can only attend to a reading that is 5 minutes long. If you were working with your individual child at home, we would recommend that you start with that 5 minutes and work up from there, so you are setting them up for success and slowly working with them to improve their skill. Now, when a teacher has a whole class of students, they have to meet all of the children in the middle, so this can be more challenging to do. Here are a few ideas that we have for setting up children for success as well as when children are distractable or need movement in order to focus on their lessons. You know your child best and your child's teacher is working directly with her, therefore an open conversation between the two of you to help establish strategies to support your individual child would be wonderful! • @SimplyCharlotteMason
      @SimplyCharlotteMason 3 дня назад

      Hi, Thank you for reaching out with your question! You may want to work with her on either the habit of attention if you think it is related to her focus or you could consider working on the habit of best effort (sometimes called "perfect execution"). This post will help you get started with the habit of attention: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/3-ways-to-work-on-the-habit-of-attention/ This post will give you a great overview of the habit of best effort. With best effort, we also need to make sure that we are not assigning too much work to the point where we may be encouraging a habit of sloppy work. For example, our child may be capable of writing two sentences neatly, however we assign them three. This results in sloppy work because their hand fatigues or the lesson is dragging on so they start to rush to get the lesson accomplished. Charlotte Mason believed in giving children short lessons, I will provide that link below as well. When we have short lessons in place, we can then layer on the expectation of best effort and expect success from our children. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/3-ways-to-work-on-the-habit-of-best-effort/ Short Lessons: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/6-benefits-of-short-lessons/

      Hi, Thank you for reaching out and sharing your feelings of being overwhelmed. We have all been there as homeschooling parents. Give yourself and your children a lot of grace. While it is easy to see all of the work that needs to be done in their lives and in your own, you have time to accomplish it, start small and don't be too hard on yourself or on them. Here is a post to encourage you in this. Let Us Not Grow Weary simplycharlottemason.com/blog/let-us-not-grow-weary/ If you are feeling overwhelmed with the habit training aspect of teaching, remember one habit at a time. Start small and manageable. You as the parent are not expected to be perfect in your habits before beginning with your children, you can start right alongside them. It is work and it can be very challenging, however you can all make progress with consistent effort toward a manageable goal. Here is a helpful post for getting started. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/habits-q-a-introduction-to-habit-training/ If you are feeling overwhelmed with your homeschooling schedule. Simplify it! my daughter is very "rebellious " what is the next step when she dosen't want to obey , what to do

    • @SimplyCharlotteMason
      @SimplyCharlotteMason 3 дня назад

      Hi, Thank you for reaching out with this question! Here are a few recommendations. 1. When starting to target the habit of obedience, start small. Choose a very simple command that she is capable of doing as well as you can choose fun commands (e.g. giving directions that are part of an anticipated activity). The goal here is to teach her about obedience. When we are teaching a new habit we want to provide our children with living examples of this idea, set them up for success, and walk them through forming that new habit at the level that they are ready for. Here is a post that is helpful in thinking through the difficulty of the command. Even if you think she "should" be able to obey a given directive at this time, if she is not, we want to make it easy at the beginning and reinforce the correct path of obedience rather than making it difficult at the start and having her choose her familiar path of disobedience which is already easier for her at this point. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/5-ways-to-work-on-the-habit-of-obedience/ 2. In an age appropriate way, it will also be helpful to her to sit down and have a conversation about your expectations and consequences for disobedience. Consequences we can tend to think of as always being a punishment, which they can be, but not always. In a Charlotte Mason approach, we strive to use educative consequences as much as possible. Our goal is for our children to learn to choose the right path the next time, essentially in this case learn to obey. Here is a helpful post on consequences: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/habits-q-amp-a-consequences/ 3. This post is a collaboration that Sonya did with Ginger Hubbard. Ginger has a lot of parenting resources and practical advice on how to deal with obedience. As parents it can be easy to fall into a pattern of interacting with our children where we are giving them too many chances to obey which leads them to think that they have a choice and we don't really mean it yet. This may not be the case with your child, however the ideas presented in this post can be very helpful in thinking through how you as the parent have responded to the disobedience in the past and how this may (or may not) be contributing to the struggle that you are currently having. Here is a link to that post that goes into more detail. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/6-discipline-mistakes-parents-make/

    This was so timely. Such a good reminder! We have had a hard time sticking to our plans this past year with bringing my mom (who had ALS) into our home to care for her 24/7 and then saying goodbye to her as she passed from here into eternity. I've felt so guilty at times as well as overwhelmed trying to stick to our curriculum and feeling like I'm letting my kids down when we don't. But now the Lord through this video and countless other places is showing me how much my kids have grown this year anyway and how it's ok to be flexible and how important it is that your curriculum serves you and not that we serve it. How we are teaching children and not teaching curriculum. You remain in my prayers Sonia. God is good and His plan is for good for those who love Him.

Would you all happen to have any suggestions regarding picture books about courage? Any search I make only returns books with post-modern agendas that do not reflect truth, goodness, or beauty. Sadly, I don't have any recollection of being read to as a child or reading many picture books. So when I find resources like SCM, I'm "greedy" for more. Haha Thank you as always! This is absolutely amazing - I find myself in the same position as a lot of people on here! My concern was that how can I instil consistency in my children when I don't have it myself? Do I need to work on myself before I start on my children? Can I somehow do all of the children at the same time for certain general tasks or should I focus individually? While it all seems like wonderful advice, I can't help feeling overwhelmed and wishing I knew this a few years before having children so as to be better prepared. I would greatly appreciate thoughts and advice

      Thank you for reaching out with your questions! 1. You can absolutely start habit training your children without having great habits yourself first, many in our online community here share how they realize habits are something they need to target in themselves as they are getting started with their children. Here are some resources to get yourself started. I am, I Can, I Ought, I Wish I Did simplycharlottemason.com/blog/i-am-i-can-i-ought-i-wish-i-did/ Laying Down the Rails for Yourself: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/new-book-laying-down-the-rails-for-yourself/ 2. Absolutely, we would recommend that you target one habit at a time as a family. You will find that each child may be at a different level for that given task and that is ok, feel free to tailor the individual child's goal for the habit as you all work together to form the general habit. Here is a great post that goes into more detail. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/habits-q-a-habits-with-multiple-children/ Here are some great resources for getting started with habit training: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/habits-q-a-introduction-to-habit-training/ Be encouraged, it can be overwhelming when we think about all of the good habits that we want for our children, however start small and work on only one habit at a time. Give your children and yourself lots of grace in this process, it is a lot of work and can be a big change for the whole family, however with consistency you will see change. It can be hard to choose which habit to start with. Charlotte Mason taught that the habits of attention, obedience, and truthfulness were foundational, so some families choose to start there. It can also be helpful to think about what would make the biggest impact on the running of your day in this season of life. Here are a few more posts to encourage you in this journey, please reach out here or on the Simply Charlotte Mason Homeschooling group on Facebook if you have any additional questions as you get started. Unfortunately, there’s too much money made by doctors diagnosing kids with ADHD! let’s stop over diagnosing kids and call it differences. God made us so different. It is the psychiatrist who love this diagnosis because they have lifelong patients.. I was diagnosed with ADHD back in the 70s and of course the educators/psychiatrist wanted to put me on medication immediately. Lucky for me my mother read lots of books, including Dr. Finegold who focused on diet. Many kids who have a diagnosis may I say a faulty diagnosis of ADHD have true allergic reactions to foods such as dairy and dies My suggestion being what I went through and also with my own child is make sure they have a very clean diet and they have plenty of exercise. You cannot just stick your child on the computer all day and then complain how they’re high energy. Remember, God made us so different. Let’s respect the individual child without making them into zombies!!

      Thank you for sharing your perspective on this topic to continue this conversation. You bring up a wonderful point here, we are are all created in the image of God. One of our goals as homeschooling parents using CM's methods is to support our children as best we can, respecting their individual personhood, while also meeting their needs and helping them form habits that will serve them well in God's calling for their lives.

    I find yelling "i said do it now before i get the sandal" in my best angry mexican mom voice is very effective. I mean we can do it the way this white lady says, but theres also a reason all you white people keep hiring our sons, and not your own. Just saying.

    I have just discovered this channel and boy have I realized how we’ve missed-stepped in raising our children and developing good habits and encouraging their willpower. Unfortunately, that lack is really starting to show in our 16 year old. I pray to the Lord that we’re not late and can recover at least some important lessons. I would appreciate anything that you can point us to that is helpful in this situation? Where we’ve missed installing key steps and habits and ideas, but are convicted to do and improve something (clearly we’re the ones who’ve been lax, but we don’t want our oldest to suffer for our mistakes and to choose what the world offers instead)

      Thank you for reaching out with your question, be encouraged it is never too late for a person to learn new good habits, even as an adult! Here is a helpful blogpost on starting habit training with older children: simplycharlottemason.com/blog/habits-q-and-a-starting-with-older-children-dealing-with-negativity/ SCM recommends a few resources for personal development as children move into the middle school and high school years. SCM has student editions of Charlotte Mason's book "Ourselves" which have all of the content contained in that volume broken down into several books and presented in a format to help a student walk through the resource. If your student has not read any of these books before, we would recommend that you start with "Self-Knowledge" even though it is listed as grade 7, it will not be "too young" and is important to the overall study to start at this point. simplycharlottemason.com/planning/curriculum-guide/personal-development/ It sounds like you have a strong faith, continue to lean on God during this season and pray for your child's heart. You can present him with these resources, good ideas, change expectations and routines in your home, and rely on the Holy Spirit to convict your child's heart in the same way that your heart has been convicted of the need for this change. Here is an encouraging post on God's role in habit training. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/god-and-habit-training/ If you are interested in habit training resources for adults as well, here are some great resources. Hi, Thank you for reaching out with your question! In a Charlotte Mason approach to education we believe in habit training. Our children will experience many things in their life as children and later as adults that they do not like, however helping them to form good habits early on will help them in so many ways. We want them to have the habit to do what they should when they don't feel like it so they can fulfill God's purpose for their lives. Here is another post on the will that helps to shed some light on this topic. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/i-am-i-can-i-ought-i-wish-i-did/

    Please help me understand how to support my child. My child has ADHD and attends a school based on the Charlotte Mason philosophy. How can I help my child concentrate in a classroom with 10 children?

      Hi, Here are a few helpful resources related specifically to ADHD as well as setting children up for success in their surroundings. It would be wonderful as you mention that he is in a school setting if you were able to sit down with his teacher and discuss some strategies that would be helpful for him. We are not set up to diagnose or give medical advice, however if you have a report from a provider who diagnosed your child or ongoing support from them, perhaps they also would be able to share some tips and supports with you and/or directly with the teacher as they have met your individual child and are aware of his specific strengths and weaknesses. Hi, Thank you for reaching out with your question! Charlotte Mason felt that short lessons were important in teaching our children. Here is a post that goes into more detail. simplycharlottemason.com/blog/6-benefits-of-short-lessons/ If you utilize the principle of short lessons and a Charlotte Mason approach to homeschooling, it is possible to have your lessons finished in a short amount of time. Now if you have younger children, out of the home commitments, interruptions in your day, etc. it will take you longer to finish the plan for the day, however the lessons themselves will still be short. Here are a few posts that go into more detail on what a Charlotte Mason education looks like at different grade levels which also helps shed light on how it's possible to accomplish their work in this short time frame.
